Located five miles northwest of Boston the town of Malden, Massachusetts is found. It was established as a town on May 2, 1649, but was March 31, 1882 before it was officially incorporated as a city. Malden celebrated their 350th anniversary with celebration that went on for an entire year from May 1999 to June 2000. The city has an approximate population of 58, 688, but it only has five sq. miles of land. There are over twenty-five places to worship in Malden that includes Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Seventh Day Adventist, Chinese, and Haitienne. The National List of Historical Places lists The Henry Hobson Library. It received an enormous 6 ½ million dollar addition in 1996. The library owns more than 220,000 books and has a computerized database with hundreds of magazine articles and public internet access.
There are around thirty parks in the city to offer various recreational opportunities. The activities provided include ball fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. There is a 400-meter synthetic running track at McDonald Stadium. The city has a public swimming pool for all to enjoy. The city is planning a 3 ½ million dollar downtown restoration project to begin in 2011. It will include various streetscape improvements such as resurfaced streets, modern lighting, flowering street trees, and enhanced sidewalks.
